An Electrostatic Condenser Type Phonograph Pickup Cartridge

Document Thumbnail

Vertical and horizontal components of the undulatory motions of the stylus as it traces the stereo record grooves are transmitted via a pair of connecting arms arranged in V-shape to the tiny vibrative diaphragms which constitute the end walls of two sound canaliculi each of which functions to carry the corresponding stereo component signals acoustically to the electret condenser type mechano-electric transducer which terminates the other end of the canaliculus. The output signals from the transducers are amplified by solid state IC amplifiers contained in the cartridge housing. This type of cartridge affords a vibrating system of very high compliance and very low effective moving mass, with a very high trackability and linearity, and wide frequency response. It also provides good immunity to magnetic induction from turntable motors, etc. Since the condenser transducers are of the electret type, no high voltage polarizing source is required.
