CBS Laboratories has completed a six-month program of acquisition and analysis of Connecticut highway traffic noise data. This paper reports on the information obtained during that program. The procedures used and conventions followed in obtaining the foregoing data are fully explained. From the data acquired and analyzed the following may be concluded: the Connecticut Turnpike contributes greater traffic noise than the other roads measured; commercial traffic is responsible for most of the objectionable noise; land contours near the road apparently play a large role in reducing noise levels; high-speed road surfaces when wet are responsible for slightly higher noise levels than when dry; and a comparison of the two principal types of secondary road surfaces-bituminous and concrete overlays-disclosed that the former is somewhat quieter.
