Needs and Specifications for Audio Equipment Used in Psychoacoustic Work

Document Thumbnail

The major intent of this paper is to make the audio engineer aware of the needs in the field of psychoacoustics. Practical requirements for rating scales create a series of requirements for psychoacoustic data, which results in specific audio equipment requirements. Sound presentation and analysis equipment emerges as the critical constraint on rating scale accuracy, as seen in variaous specific problems. These include the limited capabilities of loudspeakers, tape recorders, and frequency-shaping networks. Long-range needs include the definition of appropriate sound analysis variables (and equipment) and sound field definition. Interim goals for improvement are summarized in a sound presentation specification. Suggested degradations to this specification provide guidelines for the development of presently realizable systems.
