To date, practically all multi-track recording work has been done with the assumption that the final product will be reproduced in a two-track format. With a four channel reproduction system, new recording techniques must be developed that take into consideration the additional speakers. This paper describes some recent studio experiments in microphone placement and mixing techniques that were made while searching for a credible approach to recording for the four channel format.
