The development of a unique system for the automatic detection and identification of noisy vehicles is described. The instrument produces a continuous chart record of the A-weighted sound level at the monitoring location. Vehicles whose sound level exceeds a pre-set limit are automatically photographed by a split image camera which simultaneously records the relevant portion of the chart record. The optimum moment for photography of the vehicle is determined by a novel array utilizing cross correlation techniques.
