Digital Audio Compact Cassette Deck with Thin Film Head

Document Thumbnail

A stationary head digital audio tape deck with thin film multitrack heads has been developed. The deck uses a common 3.81 mm wide compact cassette tape with a tape speed of 4.75 cm/s. The recording head is of a newly developed high efficiency thin film (37 tracks), and its winding is formed by five turns per track. The playback head is a MR head (38 tracks) with no magnetic shield, achieving a significant improvement of the wave-length characteristic. A sampling frequency of 44.1 kHz and linear quantization of 16-bit are employed along with effective error correction and concealment techniques. Dynamic tracking servo system controlling the playback head has been utilized in this deck to secure interchangeability of the recorded tapes between the decks. Using this multitrack stationary head system, the world's highest areal recording density of 9.6 Mbit/IN2 for multitrack stationary head systems is attained.
