Systems using infrared light as a carrier of sound signals have been introduced in 1975, being based on highly efficient and low cost semiconductor elements. Frequency modulation of subcarriers modulating the light intensity was chosen as the appropriate technique. Systems with high audio quality and up to nine channels have been developed, including interesting new applications and combinations being launched in 1982.
