This paper discusses the pros and cons of the use of 8 bit companding digital/analog conversion techniques in electronic musical instruments. An analysis of the technical problems and practical solutions associated with companding digital to analog converters is provided. Emphasis is placed on the interface between the 8 bit companding digital to analog converter and 8 bit microprocessors. Technical examples from existing products are given.
