This paper reviews selected problems which must be resolved to adequately meet the amplification needs of hearing-impaired children and adults. The discussion includes the effect of hearing loss and various environmental conditions on speech perception, the performance of conventional hearing aids under ideal and adverse conditions, and the use of alternative forms of auditory amplification devices in schools and other settings.
