The signal processing technique of compact cassette digital audio tape recorder is drawing attention among those interested in consumer hi-fi audio equipment. We, Matsushita, have developed a digital tape recorder of this type using a sort of metal evaporated tape, digital Angrom tape. To realize exceeding sound quality of this tape, we have also developed a high density recording ferrite head having 12 tracks at one recording side of 120µm track width and 0.3 µm gap length. Digital signal processing circuits have also been developed to be applied to the digital recording system. Digital signal constructions, digital modulation system, error correction system, and other signal control circuits are designed especially for the cassette digital system. The digital modulation system, in particular, is the key point of the digital tape recorder. We have, therefore, developed a modulation scheme called FEM-4 for the stationary head digital tape recording system by using the compact cassette. This paper describes the practical design and system concept of this model of digital audio tape recorder.
