A Hardware Concept for an Expandable "Low-Cost" Digital Audio Mixer

Document Thumbnail

This paper describes the system and hardware concept of a variable and expandable digital audio mixing desk. Depending on the number of filter functions, one signal processing unit (SPU) can handle at least four input channels. The processor includes two 12 x 12 bit hardware muiltipliers and adders and is capable of 23 million arithmetic operations per second. It provides 24-bit internal signal representation and 16-bit I/O-wordlength, which is also expandable to 24 bits. With four input channels, for each channel a level control, three parametric equalizers, two shelving filters, variable delay or reverberation, panpots and preview can be services with one processor. For experimental tests, the control program of the SPU can be stored in RAMs and loaded by microprocessor, which enables a quick and easy program change.
