Automatic mixers are often employed in multiple microphone sound systems to turn on only the microphones immediately in use. Problems with level-sensitive gating criteria are overcome with a new operating principle using special dedicated microphones and circuitry. Microphones turn on reliably for sound sources within a predetermined acceptance angle independent of level and with a significantly reduced sensitivity to room conditions.
