Labels provide a means for conveying operational and commercial information when they are added to a host digital audio program. A versatile framework is proposed by which a common format for Labels can be adapted to t he diverse applications of the recording and broadcasting industries. A key requirement is that Labels are both recordable and transmittable from point to point. The proposal is therefore compatible with the AES/EBU serial digital audio interface and an example is given of the use of a dedicated "Labels track" on a digital audio recorder.
