Experimental and theoretical comparisons of several channel codings for PCM tape recorders were made. Maximum and minimum distances between transitions for these channel codings were 4T and 1.5T, respectively (T: length of 1 bit of original data). In these comparisons, the channel coding complexity was taken into account. Also, newly developed codes are discussed. One of the newly developed codes was found to be well suited for PCM tape recorders.
