A unified metering technique is described which combines the functions of a volume-unit (VU) meter and peak meter into a single display with but one indicator for the eye to follow. Circuitry employed permits the indicator characteristics to be matched to the headroom and pre-emphasis of the audio system in which it is installed. The system user is presented with a display of the signal amplitude characteristic most indicative of system performance at any given point in time.
