This paper describes an operational system, developed over the past 4 years, which has been designed to transmit, using digital modulation and companding techniques, radio programming from the major networks' Manhattan studios to their affiliates using satellite transmission. The theory of operation is described, from analog-to-digital conversion techniques to the Earth terminal design.
