Recent introduction of digital technology to audio equipment has resulted in great progress in the performance of audio reproduction systems. This progress has made possible the development of new compact cassette digital tape recorder. By virtue of the new digital technology, many proposals have been made employing audio cassettes as the recording media for a digital audio tape recorder. Development of magnetic read and recording medium technology, however, has been made at such a high rate that it is impossible to determine a unified system at the time. Furthermore, the details of the syst;ems which have been made public differ from one another. We have developed highly flexible signal processing system which can quickly respond to progress being made in the recording medium and magnetic head design. This newly developed signal processing system has proven to be most effective in handling these changing requirements. Effective use of this basic system has already confirmed in the compact cassette digital recorder and microcassette digital recorder, as previously reported. The balance of this paper describes the details of the signal processing system and its characteristics.
