A general voltage controlled building block for automated and remote controlled signal processors is described. The device, referred to as an operational voltage controlled element (OVCE), can be configured in a variety of ways which include all present VCA applications as a subset. The basic topology of the OVCE is described in detail together with options for achieving a realizable device. Experimental results from tests on a version of the device are given.
