The lack of an analog reference signal at the input or output prevents conventional measurement of the phase response of D-to-A and A-to-D conversion systems. A criterion for linear phase response, the squarewave response symmetry, is derived, and its simple digital measurement with low-cost circuitry is described, for the related but distinct cases of A-to-D and D-to-A conversion systems. The proposed method is supported by experimental results.
