An analysis of the processing chain linking an analog audio signal to its digitized counterpart (in both the A/D and D/A directions) is presented. The resulting model shows how to translate non-idealities in the analog processing into equivalent non-idealities in the digital (sampled-data) domain. A general result is that existing design rules lead to dispersion effects in the time domain. The types and magnitudes of dispersion effects are discussed and illustrated by both experimental data and sound recordings.
