Beside personal enjoyment, loud music can affect both musician and listener temporarily by causing, for example, headache, hearing fatigue, noises in the head and feelings of disturbance. For the more susceptible, the adaption process for regular exposures can result in permanent hearing losses which are usually much less in extent than for industrial noise exposures. Data from a preliminary investigation into sound exposure in symphony orchestras is presented and compared with other recent studies.
