Nonlinear distortions in audio amplifiers 'colour' the reproduced sound. In a typical amplifier the distortion is a mixture of several types - clipping, slewing, crossover, to name a few - and the sound colouration is the result of this mixture. A specially-designed amplifier will be demonstrated, in which varying amounts of various types of distortion can be selected by means of front-panel controls. Many types of nonlinear distortion are remarkably inaudible. These results have implications in regard to future standards for digital audio equipment.
