In this paper we discuss a variety of topics in the application of dither to a digital audio system. Basic schemes are outlined and suitable types of dither noise are considered.. Graphs are presented for analog dither of rectangular and Gausssian probability density function which illustrate linearization of the quantizer staircase, noise modulation, and the total noise. Digital dither is discussed, and it is urged that proper redithering ought to be applied whenever the audio signal is digitally manipulated.
