A system for recording and playing back a 12-cm diameter compact disc with a pre-grooved recordable alloy layer is reported. The system is capable of playing back conventional Cds, the read and write head being only a slight modification of that used in the conventional system and the signal processing system being the same. The block error rate and signal-to-noise ratio is sufficient. The system employs a GaA1As and can record and play back a sixty-minute digital audio program.
