Some Observation on Noise of Magnetic Recording Tape

Document Thumbnail

Besides the well-known influence on bias noise of the magnetizable particles' size and size distribution, some observations are given dealing with roughness and friction which cause noise from the playback head. This kind of 'microphonism' of the head is correlated to tape samples and their surfaces. The reduction of this 'microphonism' in the manufacture of the head together with reductions in surface roughness and friction in the manufacture of the tape could lead to further optimization of the signal-to-noise ratio in analog recording. In addition, in all recording fields, noise itself could be reduced.
