For a future consumer digital audio tape recorder a large amount of redundancy in channel coding as well as a large amount of signal processing circuitry will be spent for error correction and error detection. Nevertheless provisions should be made also for less probably worst cast errors which may exceed the capability of the error correcting code. What is needed especially for mechanical and magnetic wear effects with the tape, is a kind of graceful degradation with which an effective masking or concealment of residual burst errors can be performed. The present paper gives an overview of known concealment techniques and some suppositions on the detection of short time distortions by the human auditory system. Also a new and efficient burst error concealment method is proposed.
