The present state of technology imposes the use of true A/D conversion for the measured signal. By taking into account all the aspects considering the A/D converter choice which is further elaborated in the paper, it is shown that the use of a low-cost A/D converter will satisfy the most rigorous requirements confirmed to DIN 45406 and IEC standards. Further processing with simple digital methods not only solves the problems encountered with conventional design but allows numerous features otherwise impossible to realize.
