Constant-Q Graphic Equalizers

Document Thumbnail

A new class of graphic equalizers is presented that is characterized by being constant-Q, and is shown to offer significant advantages over conventional RLC and gyrator based designs in terms of adjustability, accuracy, and sonic performance. Theoretical computer analysis, as well as actual strip chart comparisons, are included. It is shown that only constant-Q designs are, in fact, true "graphic" equalizers. An introductory tutorial on the design requirements and tradeoffs of constant-Q circuitry is included, as well as a discussion regarding the combining characteristics of each class of equalizer. It is shown that all equalizers combine equally for the same bandwidths. And lastly, areas requiring future research are outlined and discussed.
