Anatomy of a Digital Filter

Document Thumbnail

This paper is a digital filter tutorial emphasizing the meaning of the relevant mathematics. A theory is developed to explain practical finite impulse response (FIR) filter operation. The design of windowed filters is examined and four different windowed lowpass filters are built and reassured. Issues such as fixed point versus floating point math and quantization effects on both signals and coefficients are skipped. We concentrated instead on the basics of digital filter operation.
