We have developed a sampling frequency converter capable of converting with very little deterioration any digital audio signal in the range from 30 kHz to 50 kHz to any other digital audio signal in the same range. 2-channel digital audio signals of up to 24 bits can be converted. Conversion occurs over four signal-processing stages and employs four new digital signal processors, two for each channel. One is used in the first stage for oversampling, and one is used in the remaining three stages for oversampling, FIR interpolation, and linear interpolation. The S/N ratio as measured using a digital notch filter, a 16-bit D/A converter, and a distortion analyzer, is over 90 dB throughout the range of conversion. A 430mm x 105mm x 350mm prototype has been made. It uses only three circuit boards and is provided with digital input and output connectors based on the AES/EBU format.
