When working in the Time, Energy, and Frequency domains of perception, it becomes necessary to understand the relationships involving Interaural Spectral Masking (ISM). ISM is the spectral distortion of a perceived signal due to interaural summing with reflections arriving within 30 milliseconds (ms). These delayed signals have experienced spectral changes due to the absorptive characteristics of their reflecting surface. While image localization has been preserved by recognition of the direct signal, the perceived spectral image has been altered. The degree of change will be illustrate through the process of backward masking in a series of interactive listening tests.
