The recent popularity of the boundary layer microphone seems to be due, at least in part, to the extravagant claims made on its behalf. The author urges a saner assessment of its real virtues and proper uses. By pairing it with a bi-directional microphone, a novel M-S stereo system is created which has some useful, if limited, applications. With the addition of a third microphone, the original concept is further elaborated, broadening the range of possible uses. The workings and special properties of Mid-Side stereo are examined in detail to ensure a clear understanding of these systems, which can provide new and potentially unique tools to the practicing recordist.
