Complementary pair transistors used in the Darlington configuration maintain linearity even for large signals by the feedback loop over the two transistors. Except where transformers are used the voltage gain is less than unity, and transformers usually cause some non-linearity. A further step provides voltage gain with the same independence on transistor parameters as well as a high input impedance proportional to the hfe product of the two transistors and a low output impedance inversely proportional to the same product.
