Characteristics of the Sansui QS Vario-Matrix based on a Psychoacoustic Study of the Localization of Sound Sources in Four-Channel Stereo (Parts I and II)

Document Thumbnail

Part I: The dynamic distribution of spearation by the Vario-Matrix decoding technique is described with particular reference to the occurrence of simultaneous and closely succeeding sounds from different directions. This operation is related to the perception of directionality, including directional masking effects with respect to time difference, amplitude difference and even frequency difference. Part II: The mechanism by which sound directionality is recognized by the human ear is investigated, particularly with respect to reproduction in a basic, four-channel sound field. The roles of such factors as phase, amplitude and frequency are studied, and an attempt is made to establish a theoretical basis for the mechanism of perception.
