The sound scattering properties of diffusing panels are actually very difficult to measure and predict. Furthermore a unique, commonly accepted 'diffusion coefficient' has not yet been defined. In this paper the wave field synthesis approach is employed for the experimental measurement of a physically defined diffusion coefficient. The results are in good agreement with the numerical simulations presented in a parallel paper.
