A Consideration of the Fundamentals of Passive and Active Acoustics

Document Thumbnail

The acoustic transfer characteristic between a sender and a receiver in free space is a perfect one. The acoustic transfer characteristic between a sender and receiver in a passive architectural enclosure exhibits a wide variety of severe distortions. The acousto-electronic acoustic transfer characteristic between a sender and a receiver in an active architectural enclosure exhibits a lower order of distortion than the passive system because the active system can be designed to approximate free space conditions. Another distinct advantage of the active system is that the acoustics can be controlled over a wide range of conditions.
