This paper surveys the current state of our knowledge regarding the audible consequences of phase nonlinearities in the audio chain, describes a series of experiments which the authors have conducted using a flexible system of all-pass networks carefully constructed for this purpose, and draws some preliminary conclusions regarding the audible effects of midrange phase distortion.

This is an overview of the basic theory behind audibility of group delay, and a discussion of possible experiments using synthesized waveforms.  Some preliminary listening tests are performed and they match well with the work done by Hansen and Madsen in _Threshold of Phase Detection by Hearing.
