Wan Issues and ATM

Document Thumbnail

As Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networking becomes increasingly affordable, and long-distance (including international) ATM services become increasingly available, this technology becomes an increasingly attractive option for the conveyance of professional-quality PCM linear audio. The first half of the paper describes the main features of ATM networks, with emphasis on those services that are relevant to professional real-time audio. The second half examines the issues that arise when digital audio is shared between different locations, such as delays, synchronisation, and data errors, and compares the performance of ATM with other technologies.
