Recent increases in the interest in surround sound systems for domestic use, especially those using the approach pioneered for cinema usage, are placing new demands on recording engineers. The paper discusses ways in which the cumbersome panpotted multiple microphones can be replaced by one or more single point microphones of the type originally developed for Ambisonic recording with resulting improvements in size and convenience of microphone array. Some suggestions are made for future developments.
