The Design of an Unusual Drive Unit

Document Thumbnail

The design brief called for a fully active, aperiodic, stereo loudspeaker within an enclosure no taller than 150mm and limited in length to about 1.5, for mounting on a console meter penthouse or hanging from the ceiling.: Given the overall dimensions, the low frequency driver would have a very small volume behind it. To provide satisfactory performance it was concluded that the electronics would have to compensate for the driver and its surroundings.: Initial experiments with off-the-shelf driver units suggested that a different trade-off of mechanical parameters might produce a better overall result. This paper will describe the process of the driver unit definition, subsequent design and resulting performance.
