The new discrete multichannel sound format 3/2-stereo is a challenge for sound engineers and producers. The DVD is offering 5.1 surround sound with and without accompanying picture to the consumer, and television and radio services will be able to provide advanced stereophonic quality very soon. A number of national and international standards and recommendations exists, which require, however, a harmonization and a global practical conversion, both in the studio and with the consumer industry. The German -Surround Sound Forum- has been working on this topic for about two years. One result is a document introduced here. It defines and describes individual parameters for programme interchange and archiving, and a reliable method for alignment of the playback system. It contains a measuring and test DVD, which is usable in the studio and in the home.
