As we move in to the second century of audio, multichannel reproduction systems are at last being acquired by significant numbers of consumers. This paper poses the question -What does 'High Fidelity' mean in multichannel audio?- The paper explores some of the current approaches to multichannel audio and tries to assess what the possibilities are for developing better strategies than simply adapting systems already in use in the Film and Television industries.
