Dolby Digital Surround Systems

Document Thumbnail

This paper is an overview of the Dolby Digital audio system that has been selected by the DVD forum as the only multichannel audio format for both PAL and NTSC DVDs; by the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) for use in the US and Canadian High Definition Television systems, and has been selected as the preferred method of carrying the audio in the Australian DVB system. It starts by examining why producers would want to use multichannel sound, what the requirements for a multichannel audio system are and the impact of multichannel audio on the consumer market. The paper concludes by examining some of the key features that are provided by the Dolby Digital specification.
