Sound radio services will soon go digital. The Eureka 147 system will replace traditional FM services. The paper gives some of the reasons why Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) is needed and summarizes the principal system and services characteristics. It outlines the main milestones in the Eureka 147 development as seen from the EBU perspective. Then, it describes the standardization processes within ETSI, ITU and CENELEC which led to the recognition of the Eureka 147 System as the worldwide standard for both terrestrial and satellite delivery. The roles of the EBU and the World Broadcasting Union (WBU) are briefly mentioned. In future, a central coordinating role may be assigned to the newly established EuroDab Forum. Finally, the paper gives an indication of the experimental and pilot DAB services currently being pursued in a dozen of European countries and in Canada. It remains to be seen and demonstrated whether or not the Eureka 147 System is also a viable system for the commercial satellite delivery to mobile and portable radio receivers.
