The paper charts the system testing and broadcast field trials undertaken by the BBC in order to determine whether the Eureka 147 DAB System would meet the requirements formulated for a revolutionary digital broadcasting system on which the future delivery of sound radio will depend well into the 21st century. This culminated with successful results from the major -London DAB Experiment- to test the single frequency network capabilities of DAB at realistic power levels. The design of a national single-frequency network quickly followed, giving substantial economy in spectrum utilization and total transmitted power, in comparison with the existing FM networks. The first phase will be implemented from September 1995 over the following two and a half years to reach 60% of the UK population and cover the major interconnecting motorways.
