The first application of the new High Density DVD will be DVD Video, that supports standard broadcast quality video and multichannel audio. The video will be coded according to the MPEG-2 Video standard. For PAL/SECAM countries, MPEG-2 Audio is the mandatory sound coding system. Special features of MPEG-2 Audio in the DVD Video application are: Variable Bit Rate, 5.1 or 7.1 channel configuration, bit rates from 32 up to 912 kbit/s and matrixed surround sound output. For NTSC countries, AC-3 has been specified. Features of AC-3 in the DVD Video application are: 5.1 channel configuration and bit rates from 32 up to 448 kbit/s. A compressed audio interface has been specified. Next to compressed audio, Linear PCM is supported.
