This paper presents the 'Direct Stream Digital' system which has applications in archiving, improved CD quality and Audio for New Media. DSD involves the direct recording of the one-bit output of a delta/sigma-type analogue-to-digital converter. A dynamic range of more than 120dB to 20kHz is provided, with a frequency response from DC to over 100kHz. A simple, very general, discussion of the information requirements of audio transmission is followed by a discussion of the role of DSD in the audio chain including archiving, production and distribution.
