A Practical Approach to a Multi-Channel Future for Broadcast Television

There has been a proliferation of multi-channel standards proposed for the new media. There are many of us in Television who have only just made the transition to stereo, and the reaction to any number of surround sound channels is often to say -it's not practical for real live television-.: : In fact, it is not practical for us to ignore the onset of broadcast multi-channel surround sound and this paper explains how we tackled the problems caused by surround at Central TV, and how the solutions lead on to a possible approach to the higher order surround systems.
