It is becoming increasingly important to be able to accurately measure and assess the performance of sound systems, particularly those also used for emergency purposes. There is a clearly increasing appreciation by listeners of better sound quality in all forms of sound system from auditoria to stadia and from churches to cinema systems. A wide variety of acoustic measures is available to assist, ranging from traditional frequency responses to the more recent, computer-based forms such as STI and energy ratios. Whilst such measures enable detailed analyses to be made, the paper demonstrates and concludes that perceptually- based measures may also be able to offer additional useful insights.
