Hitherto the only reliable method for evaluating audio quality of codecs based on psychoacoustics has been by subjective assessments. Performance of a subjective test is a demanding and time consuming procedure. It would of course be desirable if a listening panel could be substituted for a measurement tool which gave a similar output value, i.e. a direct mapping to perceived audio quality. ITU-R has established Task Group 10-4 with the aim to issue a draft Recommendation for an objective perceptual measurement method by the end of 1997. This paper describes the work of TG 10-4, the results so far and some experiences gained during the work.
